Streaming on Paramount+, 1883 is an American drama television series that tails an earlier era of the Dutton family as they travel from Fort Worth, Texas, to Montana to establish what would ultimately become the Yellowstone Ranch. The show is a prequel to Sheridan’s series Yellowstone and follows how the Duttons came to own the land that would evolve the Yellowstone Ranch.

The show made its debut on the streaming outlet on December 19, 2021, and ran for ten episodes before concluding on February 27, 2022. The western drama was created by Taylor Sheridan and produced by David Hutkin. The show’s star cast includes Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Noah Le Gros, Eric Nelsen, LaMonica Garrett, and many more.

The stands with an average score of 7.5/10 on Rotten Tomatoes. Viewers were quite shocked to see the ending of the season finale episode “This Is Not Your Heaven”. We have seen many programs killing fans’ favourite characters at the end of the season simply to gain more viewers for another instalment, and it’s an old strategy to keep their viewers on their toes. But the last episode of the prequel left fans with multiple questions when the show decided to kill its lead character.

The character that came to an end is the brooding cowboy and Dutton family paterfamilias James Dutton’s 17-year-old daughter, Elsa Dutton. Her death surprised many as she was the narrator of the whole series. She was the audience’s eyes and ears for the Dutton family and European immigrant caravan trying to make it to Oregon.

The show had been teasing the fans since the beginning of the ninth episode, “Racing Clouds”, by letting us know that Elsa Dutton will die and, in the process, almost dared its audience to not believe it. Perhaps, this was the exact reason behind the disbelief, as we have never anticipated her demise, especially this early into the story.

In the second last episode, the young teenager got shot with an arrow, and despite fighting her enemies due to pumping adrenaline, she still succumbed to death due to an infection. Elsa’s mother was shown adamant that her daughter would survive, yet the father seemed sure that she would not overcome the wound.

For a moment, we felt as if she would survive, but in the end, we see James riding with his daughter and asking the spotted eagle to provide him with a place to rest his child. The spotted eagle directed him to a beautiful hunting group where she died in his arms on the ground to evolve Yellowstone ranch one day.

The ending’s only answer is it makes us comprehend that the world doesn’t care about our last minute hail Marys. When confronted with the awful and violent ruler of nature, the best we can do is sculpt out our own little piece to tame. Like the Duttons do with Yellowstone in Montana.
