Researchers set out to discover what type of impact moderate to intense exercise may have on reducing mortality from cancer, heart disease, or any other cause in a study published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine in November 2020.

According to the findings, people who engaged in strenuous physical activity that raised their heart rate on a regular basis, such as running or aerobic exercise, had a decreased chance of dying from cancer or heart disease. However, individuals who committed to 150 minutes per week—or a little over 20 minutes per day—of moderate to strenuous exercise exhibited again in life duration and a decreased early mortality risk from all causes when compared to those who worked out at a moderate level overall.

“This analysis implies that a larger percentage of [vigorous physical activity] VPA to total physical activity was related with decreased all-cause mortality,” the researchers write. This includes steep climbing, jogging, swimming laps, aerobic dance, strenuous yard work such as digging, singles tennis, cycling 10 miles per hour or faster, and jumping rope, according to the American Heart Association (AHA).
