The latest Star Wars television series to grace Disney Plus (opens in new tab) bridges the gap between the prequel and the original trilogy. “Obi-Wan Kenobi” boasts the return of Ewan McGregor’s acclaimed Jedi Master and former apprentice Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader – though it’s yet to be confirmed whether James Earl Jones will reprise his iconic vocal role.

If that wasn’t enough to make lightsabers swing, “The Mandalorian’s” Deborah Chow (responsible for the excellent Episodes 3 and 7) is returning to the director’s chair. But how can Ben Kenobi’s babysitting days on Tatooine match the best Star Wars TV shows? And how does it cope with its crucial role in ensuring the near-total destruction of the Jedi Order?

The opening of Episode 1 will surely please prequel lovers with a never-before-seen return of the attack on the Jedi Temple during Order 66. It begins with a pair of 501st clone troopers entering a classroom full of teenagers. Jedi mentors intercept the intruders and lead their students to a corridor where they send a few more clones before succumbing to blaster fire. As the clone squads shoot down the warriors who once led them into battle, the youths flee to the Great Hall of the temple, where we see the true extent of the attack.

Fans have long thought the series would feature flashbacks to the era of the clone wars, and it’s only fitting that a string with the Great Jedi Purge as the backdrop will step up newcomers and start where it all began. It’s also nice to see what appears to be physical actors playing physical clones instead of the CGI soldiers from previous episodes.
