The unmatched thriller Korean survival drama bags a green light for its second season from the chief content officer of Netflix.

The squid game has been a massive success for the streaming label. It has scored as the company’s No.1 most-viewed TV series. Its breakout in 2021 led to a huge interest in Korean dramas globally, people are watching Korean shows more than ever, all thanks to the astounding direction and scripting of the Squid Game.

On Netflix’s fourth-quarter earnings interview, chief content officer Ted Sarandos was asked about another season for the South Korean drama series. To which Sarandos replied, “Absolutely, The Squid Game universe has just begun.”

He has put Squid game in the category of Netflix’s burgeoning bouquet of entertainment franchise, the company sees the growth potential outside the core streaming with the involvement of live experiences, games, and merchandise. Ted called Bridgerton the second most viewed on the platform, its season two is scheduled to be available for streaming from March this year, and Stranger Things is set to release its season 4 in the summers of 2022.
The creator of the show Hwang Dong-hyuk also made comments on the second season of the show. “There’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like I have no choice! But I will say there will indeed be a second season. It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently.”
He also said that the main lead actor Lee Jung-Jae will return as the main character in season 2.
The show made history at the 2022 SAG Awards as it became the first non-English language series and first Korean series to secure a nomination, for cast in drama series, actor in drama series, actress in drama series, and stunt ensemble. Moreover, the show won three Golden Globe Awards, three Critics Choice Awards, and a winner for breakthrough series for Gotham Awards.
Success ventures of the show can go on but fans are eagerly waiting for the thrilling second season.
