Scientists Find Environment-Friendly Electrolyte Batteries

The emergence of the smartphone is the biggest development of the tech industry in the last decade. But, batteries are the most underrated aspect in terms of up-gradation. The currently existing Lithium-ion batteries are not recyclable and might result in a big explosion.

Recently, researchers from the Illinois University successfully developed a solid polymer electrolyte. The best part is, the batteries can heal itself after damage. Solid polymer electrolytes will not require any harsh chemical compounds or extreme temperatures. Surprisingly, these two are the biggest limitations of Lithium-ion batteries.

More about the Development of Batteries

Once a Lithium-ion battery started to undergo the charging cycles, it develops a structure called dendrites, researchers revealed. These dendrites are responsible for the reduction in battery life. It reduces battery life, and some times it becomes responsible for the explosion of the batteries. As a result, the expert thinks that the recent replacement will benefit the industry in the long term. However, many of the solid materials are brittle and rigid and poor conductors of electricity. The solid replacement denies the growth of dendrites; as a result, the battery could sustain damages and could recover even after damage.

One of the authors of the study Jing revealed that the new development is truly remarkable as the ductility and electric conductivity of the network polymer increases with the application of heat, unlike the existing polymers batteries.

Christopher Evans, the lead author of the study, stated that the majority of the polymers breaks down with the application of high temperature and strong acids. But, the recently found material even dissolves in the water at room temperature. The recently found way is energy-efficient and environmentally friendly; as a result, a wide scale of industries will adopt the newest development in batteries in the future. It will also address the growing concern over climate change, an expert related to the matter revealed.
