Actor Cillian Murphy who plays Thomas Shelby, the protagonist of the crime family on Peaky Blinders, discusses how he is never seen eating over the 6-season course of the series. Murphy is joined by Annabelle Wallis, Paul Anderson, Joe Cole, Sophie Rundle, Finn Cole, Sam Neill, Tom Hardy, Sam Claflin, and late Helen McCrory.

The show created by Steven Knight deals with the exploits of the Peaky Blinders in the instant aftermath of WW1 the period fiction is based on a real gang of the same name who sewed razor blades into the peaks of their hats. The series has obtained a ginormous fanbase worldwide since it first dropped.

In a recent interview with BBC Radio 1, Murphy explains why he is never seen consuming any food on the show. He revealed that he was unaware of the fact that he had not eaten anything onscreen until the making of seasons 1 and 2. It gave him and Knight the idea to keep it and turn it into a ‘running gag .’Further stating that playing a character for so long gives you the luxury to add intricacies into the characters.

He said, “I remember, we’d got through the first two series, and then realized that Tommy has never eaten, we’ve never seen Tommy eat. Like, He’s sat down on the tables, but he’s never consumed a morsel. So, throughout the 36 hours of television, Tommy Shelby never consumes a sprig of mint when he’s with his son. So, these things develop when you have the luxury of being with a character for so long, these little things arise, and you just… You know, I will say to Steve, or Steve will pick up on it, and then we’ll just kind of run with it, you know.”

The fans pointed out the character never eating in 2017, before the release of season 4. Murphy has consumed whiskey a whopping 213 times onscreen and countless cigarettes.

The show is currently premiering on BBC in the UK with weekly new episodes, and it will arrive on Netflix on June 10. Stay tuned for more updates.
