The NASA mission Lucy was launched on October 16, 2021, with the rocket of the United Launch Alliance Atlas V. At first, everything seemed fine – Lucy was on her daring mission to test Jupiter’s Trojan asteroids.

However, they soon became trapped. Although both solar arrays were used, one did not open all the way and held on to the fully utilized area. While solar arrays generate a lot of energy, NASA is concerned that burning a large engine in the current configuration could damage the system. Therefore, the team decided to proceed with the problem-solving process.

NASA’s Lucy Mission team is in the midst of that multi-phase effort to move forward and deploy an unstructured solar spacecraft. On May 9, the team instructed the spacecraft to drive a series of engines using both primary and supporting curves simultaneously to produce more torque, i.e., gravity. The machine worked as expected, moving forward on a lanyard pulling an open solar array. After driving the engine for short intervals to avoid overheating, the team pauses to analyze the results. Data from the spacecraft showed that deployment was progressing similarly in engineering exploration, allowing the team to move forward with the second phase of the effort. Data analysis also suggested that there was still an additional lanyard to be withdrawn. The team re-sent the same orders on May 12. Although this series of commands did not fully open up to the Sun, it pushed forward enough deployments to increase the tension stabilizing arrays as expected.

On May 26, the spacecraft was again ordered to release solar panels. As in the first two attempts, both motor windings are used simultaneously for a short period to avoid overheating. The team then reviewed the event details, indicating that the series was still open. The team repeated the order of the fourth submission on June 2. While the same members did not delay, the data showed that it continued to supply and strengthened throughout the effort.

The team has several opportunities to repeat these usage instructions. While there is no guarantee that additional efforts will unite the same members, there is strong evidence that the process puts the same members under more significant, more persistent tensions. Even if the team is not caught in the end, more strength may be enough to fly the campaign as planned.

The spacecraft completed its orientation direction on June 7. This was the first time in a series of spacecraft that the spacecraft would take to prepare for Earth’s first aid operation scheduled for October 16, 2022.
