“We were created to do this.”

On Friday, December 17, James Hetfield gave a statement, and he declared it to more than 18,000 fans for the first night of Metallica’s Fortieth-anniversary celebration. Chase Center of San Francisco was packed with the audience from Metallica’s fan club, representing states, cities, and countries.

At Chase Center, the band did the show at that venue back in 2019 before the pandemic. After the pandemic (after 18 months approx), Metallica planned to takeover over their hometown to celebrate their 40 years together as a band. Friday night was their first of 2 sold-out performances.

Metallica’s return to the Bay Area was very energetic and totally focused on the band’s history, videos of concerts, photos, and interviews played in-between songs for a two-hour set approx. Instead, Hetfield did not spend much time talking to the audience and guided fans through 16 songs that covered their complete studio discography.

While fans may have expected more distinct treats throughout the evening—the opening “warm-up” act featuring comedian Dean Delray and Public Enemy’s DJ Lord wasn’t met with much enthusiasm from the crowd—there was no doubt that this was a celebration like only Metallica could throw.

Metallic Setlist: December 17, 2021, at The Chase Center:
