In the empire podcast, Reeves, who plays Neo in the film, revealed that he did not believe director Lana Wachowski was interested in producing another Matrix picture.

“If I had to cast a ballot – no, a vote – I would say Lana would not do another Matrix,” he continued.

Producer James McTeigue also affirmed that no further Matrix films are in the works.

“Right now, it’s just the movie you’ve seen,” he told Collider. “We have no plans for a prequel.” We have no plans for a sequel. There will be no more trilogy.”

It comes after the picture performed poorly at the box office, grossing only $22.5 million (£16.7 million) by December 26 in the United States. The most recent box office data for the United Kingdom are yet to be announced.

On December 22, The Matrix: Resurrections was released in the United Kingdom. The creative battle sequences are invigorating if you’ve watched one too many hollow superhero movies, and there are some memorable performances,” NME stated in a three-star review of the film.

Reeves told NME before the film’s release that he wanted to return to the role of Neo because of “life experience and all of [what] it implies, the highs and the lows and all of the in-betweens.”

“I felt that the character and the journey of it are kinds of an exploration of the past; how do I feel about it and where am I now,” he explained. “What does it all mean?” What is crucial? So there was a lot of contemplation and want to understand, rather than nostalgia.”

Lana Wachowski, meanwhile, reportedly stated that creating The Matrix: Resurrections helped her cope with loss when her parents died.

After years of declaring she didn’t want to add another film to the Matrix trilogy, the writer and director made the fourth installment.
