Watching Oscar-nominated films in 2022 is an exercise in perplexity. When studios planned their release schedules around the late-January Oscar nominations, this month was a wonderful opportunity to catch up in cinemas. This year, nominations aren’t due until February 8; we also have Covid and the ongoing battle of specialty exhibition. Their films prefer shorter, broader theatrical runs before going on to the greener pastures of VOD.
In principle, that should be excellent news — but being able to watch a movie at home isn’t always the same as knowing where to get it. Finding the major-category contenders requires following down their VOD release dates or searching for them on one of the six main streaming services.
The films listed below are considered Academy Award candidates, as well as a few that rated high on the 10 best lists. By January 21, 28, the home platform will be available. A few have yet to be released in cinemas. Most are showing in at least a few theatres, but listings for Netflix and Amazon films are nearly difficult to come by.
The list shows which titles are streaming (for free to subscribers), which are in cinemas, and which have Premium and regular VOD rental choices on standard platforms.
