Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks have been cast as Celie and Sofia in Blitz Bazawule’s film musical “The Colour Purple.”

Barrino made her Broadway debut as Celie in 2007 following her “American Idol” victory, while Brooks garnered a Tony Award nomination for her performance of Sofia in the 2015 revival.

Barrino and Brooks were cast as part of the ABC News program “Soul of a Nation Presents: Screen Queens Rising” on Thursday. During the show, “ABC News Live Prime” host Linsey Davis spoke with the ladies on reprising their parts for the film and following Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey’s Oscar-nominated big-screen performances.

During a Zoom chat, Brooks relived the emotional moment when Winfrey, who is producing the new film under her Harpo Films company, informed that she had been cast in the part.

Brooks, who is most known for her roles on “Orange is the New Black” and “Peacemaker,” also claimed that viewing “The Color Purple” on Broadway as a youngster motivated her to pursue acting.

Similarly, Barrino stated that as a young child viewing the film, she was moved by Celie’s narrative.

The upcoming Warner Bros. film is based on the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, which is based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name. Bazawule, who directed BeyoncĂ©’s “Black Is King,” “The Burial of Kojo,” and “Cherish the Day,” is in charge of the production. The script, based on Walker’s novel, the 1985 film, and the stage musical, was written by Marcus Gardley (“The Chi”) (with a book by Marsha Norman, and music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Stephen Bray, and the late Allee Willis).

Along with Winfrey, Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment returns to produce. The Broadway musical’s producers, Scott Sanders and Quincy Jones are also producers. Executive producers include Alice Walker, Rebecca Walker, Mara Jacobs, Carla Giardini, Kristie Macosko Krieger, and Adam Fell.

“The Color Purple” will begin filming this spring and will be released in 2023.
