The people who are staying on the eastern side of the United States are going to watch a rare meteor shower on Thursday night. The meteor shower, known as Alpha Monocerotids, is said to be a sporadic event in the region. Scientists are predicting that the meteor shower will last up to one hour. And, people will able to see around 400 meters for one hour.
Peter Jenniskens and Esko Lyytinen, two meteor experts, published their assessments about today’s shower in a private news agency. They predict the shower to be started by 11.50 p.m., but they advised the interested people to reach the watch zone 35 minutes before the meteor shower to experience the entire event.
The American Meteor Society revealed that the people belong to the eastern and northern side of America, northwestern Africa, and Western Europe will able to see the rare meteor shower while the people of Western America could witness the unique event.
Scientists revealed that the radiant would be near the horizon at the time of meteor shower; as a result, those who are staying on the western side of the country will no longer enjoy the rare event. But then might see a small portion of the shower on the Eastern horizon.
The History of Meteor Shower in November
The Alpha Monocerotids shower is named after the Monoceros constellation. The constellation appears every year during late November or early December, but usually brings four to five meteors per hour. But, sometimes, it also brings enormous meteor showers like 2019. The last meteor shower was recorded on the way back in 1995.
Before 1995, the events were recorded in 1925, 1935, and 1985. During 1925 and 1935 meteor shower, the number of meteors was as high as 1000 per hour. The 1985 event saw around 700 meteors per hour, while 1995 witnessed 400 meteors.
NASA predicts that this year’s event likely to reduce the number of meteors in comparison to last recorded events.
