Cannes Film Festival 2022: Only 3 Female Directors Shortlisted So Far

The season’s pickups at the Cannes seem to have fallen short in gender disparity.

Cannes was the first International Festival to sign a gender parity pledge back in 2018. However, it has unfortunately failed to maintain the benchmark in the representation of female directors in competition as it remains under the dominance of male directors.

Last week, the director and the man behind the Cannes festival, Thierry Fremaux, revealed that he hoped to have a better and more robust presence of female directors in 2022. However, he still has not reached his goal as the gender margins have quite the difference.

Only three female-directed films have been shortlisted out of the 18 titles until this point. The year’s proportion has held up only a handful of the female talent of well-established directors such as Kelly Reichardt, who is all set to present another Michelle Williams starring project, “Showing Up,” a French-Italian actor Valeria Bruni Tedeschi with “Forever Young” and Claire Denis for “Stars At Noon.”

It is pretty intriguing to report that while female directors are still under-represented at the festival, they have globally outperformed themselves regarding getting awarded. Two female helmers have only won the Palme d’Or; In its 74-years history, only Julia Ducournau’s “Titane” in 2021 and Jane Campion’s “The Piano Lesson” in 1993 have received it. In 2019 three out of the four shortlisted women won something says. Mati Diop won the Grand Prize with “Atlantique,” Celine Sciamma got one for the screenplay for “Portrait of a Lady on Fire.” Jessica Hausner got it for Little Joe’s Best Actress Emily Beecham.
