When we are under stress, the muscles that help us to breathe, tense up due to stress. Which can leave us short of breath and cause rapid breathing.

4 Pounding heart

When we take stress then, the adrenal glands release the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline, which revs our heartbeats.

5 High blood sugar

Stress causes our liver to release an extra amount of glucose into our bloodstream. This can increase the chance of type 2 diabetes over time.

6 High blood pressure

Stress hormones tighten blood vessels, which can raise our blood pressure.

7 Increase the risk of heart attack

Over time, high blood pressure and an increased heart rate damage our arteries, which can lead to a heart attack.

8 Insomnia

Stress makes it harder for a person to fall asleep and stay asleep, which can lead to insomnia.

9 Weakened immune system

Long-term stress weakens our immune system’s defense which means it makes us an easy target for germs and bacteria.
