European regulators deployed their internal Marie Kondo to address the cable clutter problem. One major distraction may eventually disappear.

Most of the time, you do not want the government to get involved in the production of technology products for obvious reasons. Apple products have cooled due to a design icon named Jony I’ve – dozens of DC officials cannot match his product.

But Apple is also guilty of producing an annoying number of charging cables that work exclusively for its devices. God help you if you are an iPhone user who loves Kindle and wears a Garmin watch. You pack three lines for a weekend trip and four when you bring your laptop. It has been like this for decades, and no one likes it.

All of that can change soon.

This week, the European Union has taken an unusual step to reduce clutter and cable cuts by requiring Apple and other smartphone manufacturers to support a single standard charging standard for mobile devices in early 2024.

Under the law, all your daily rechargeable devices with a cable – phones, tablets, e-readers, earbuds, cameras, portable speakers, etc. – will need to be plugged into a USB-C port.
Not at all surprising – Apple has been preparing for the end of its special lightning connector for a long time. The company is already using the USB-C standard on some Macs and iPods and is reportedly testing iPhone models that change the power line. But the law could put a fire under Apple’s designers to completely change the USB-C and eventually kill the electricity charger permanently.
